New Traffic Record or “Dude Where’s my Bandwidth”

5000 Podcast Downloads!!!

As it turns out, the month of January 2007 was a banner month for the Radio Theater podcast.

5789 mp3 files were downloaded from the site. As there were only a couple of new episodes posted in january, some perusal of the logs would indicate that this corresponds to about 1200 new podcast subscribers.

The Maltese Falcon was (by a small margin) our most popular show, closely followed by Sorry Wrong Number and 5.

December was also a high traffic month for us. While only 4192 audio files were downloaded, Wonderful Life (Christmas Eve Edition) was a smash hit with 3013 downloads from its posting on Christmas Eve through the end of the month.

Here’s hoping for 10,000 in the future.

100th Anniversary of Broadcast Radio

Here we are, December 24th, 2006, 100 years to the day after early radio luminary Reginald Aubrey Fessenden made the first radio broadcast of entertainment and music. On that Christmas eve a century ago Fessenden made a brief broadcast from Brent Rock, MA, in which he read a bible passage, played the violin, played an Edison Phonograph recording of Handel’s Largo and wished listeners — ships passing by — a Merry Christmas.

Here’s to 100 years of broadcast radio — a century of the modern age.

Princeton astronomers scoured the countryside in search of meteorites. Brave men called recruiting stations to sign up to fight Martians. Farmers shot at tripod-like water towers. Relive the hysteria as the Middlebury Radio Theater of Thrillls and Suspense concludes its glorious first season with the most celebrated radio drama of all time, “War of the Worlds,” as adapted for the radio by Orson Wells and the Mercury Theater on the Air for Halloween, 1938. So, take your radio outside, lie beneath the stars and witness the Martian subversion of the human race.
