September 8, 2008: Due to some major issues with one of the hosting companies, the podcast is temporarily down. It will be back up as soon as possible. Stay tuned for more.

Update, September 9, 2008: All podcast episodes as well as all other online functionality should be back up.

In eager preparation for the new season, we’ve been making some major changes to the website. We just moved to a newer, faster, and significantly more robust server. In addition, we have the biggest new change to the podcast in some time. The podcast is now deliverd using the S3(TM) service from Amazon(TM). S3 is the same service used by companies such as SmugMug(TM) and others. By using their super fast networks, we have removed the bottleneck which sometimes occured when lots of users were updating the podcast simultaneously. With the S3(TM) based podcast, we should be able to deliver to an almost infinite number of users at maximum speed.

Major Site Upgrades

Although only a couple of minutes browsing would be enough to demonstrate that there are a number of new features on the site, I decided to write a post to enumerate some of the new features.

  •  A “People” Section (located in the bar at the top of the page)
  • Inline media player: Click on a link in one of the podcast posts, it will turn into a Flash media playe (go, try it).
  • New rolling archives(and several other widgets courtesy of the new release of K2)
  • Numerous structural updates courtesy of WordPress 2.3
  • On air section and now playing (while we’re on the air)
  • New AJAXy contact form via cForms ][. It actually delivers to our mailboxes now.
  • New podcast hosting server, seamlessly aloows 2-3 times as many simultaneous downloads.

Unlike some previous releases, this has been fairly throughly tested on our testing site before this release, however, if you do experience some weird behavior:

  1. Try clearing your browser’s cache
  2. If that fails, send a help messgae from our new contact form

Finally, bandwidth has been upped, so those of you experiencing problems with downloads being really slow and failing should see a marked increase. If you do continue to have troubles, please send a message.

Banned in China!

banned in chinaWhile this probably does not surprise many of our loyal listeners, it has been confirmed that the Middlebury radio theater has been banned in China.

UPDATE: This has got me doing a little investigating into other countries which ban websites, at the moment the list looks as follows:

China: Banned

Iran: Banned

Saudi Arabia: Likely Banned

As Adam said, when the commies start banning you, you know you have achieved your mission.

PHP 5 and Engine Updates

I am rolling out PHP 5 and some other server updates in order to roll out some new engine changes to the site and some new features.

If the site starts acting funky please let me know.

And for those of you holding your breath, site updates will occur with a special podcast update.

UPDATE: Well that didn’t work so well. I restored to PHP 4, and am now looking into why that entirely took down the site.

Internet Explorer Foibles

Several of you have written, mentioning some issues with internet explorer and the new design. We’re looking into. In the meantime, enjoy some of the other nice new features, and rest assured that there will be more podcast episodes in the next couple of days.

UPDATE: These issues should be fixed in Vista and in IE7 on XP.

UPDATE: If it’s really that bad, then stop sending me e-mails, and upgrade to firefox (you know who you are)
